Sigmund Freud Museum 2020

Sigmund Freud’s workplace at Vienna’s Berggasse 19 is to undergo conversion as of March 2019. Following conversion, it will be presented in a form that does justice to the international importance of this unique museum and scientific location and to Freud’s continuing influence today. The aim is to safeguard Freud’s cultural legacy at the intersection of culture, science and art for future generations, to develop it, and to make it accessible to a wide public. The Sigmund Freud Museum reopens in May 2020, renovated, extended, and with barrier-free access.

ENVISIONING IN ORDER TO SEE

In order to make Freud’s legacy visible, the Museum’s facilities are to be extended and the exhibition areas enlarged by more than forty per cent. In addition to the museum display of Sigmund Freud’s life and work and the development of psychoanalysis, the aim is to create spaces for a critical scrutiny of current sociopolitical phenomena and for contemporary art interventions.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

With Europe’s largest library on psychoanalysis and its archive, the Sigmund Freud Museum is to be developed as an international communication platform for scientific exchange so as to strengthen the international and national networking of researchers from different disciplines and institutions.

PRESERVING AND REMEMBERING

A location steeped in history, Berggasse 19 is inscribed in collective memory in two respects: as the birthplace of psychoanalysis and as a monument to the horrors and atrocities of Nazi rule.
